Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
UPDATE:
THIS EVENT IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, AUGUST 9TH, 2014
As a reminder, due to the sensitive nature of this event, we cannot post any photos of the kids there in the internet. Also, we cannot bring any of our own kids to the event. All persons trooping or attending the Hillsides orphanage troop must be at least 18 years of age.
Location:
Hillsides
940 Avenue 64
Pasadena, Ca. 91105
Website: [Only admins are allowed to see this link]
Saturday, August 9th. Costumers are requested to show up starting from 9:45am to 10:00am.
The event itself starts at 11:15am and will last for approximately 90 minutes.
Weapon props (such as blasters and lightsabers are okay.
Things you need to know:
This event is an Official Event, as outlined in our Member Handbook, closed to the public.
The 501st Legion, Rebel Legion, Mandalorian Mercs, and Saber Guild are invited to join us once again this year. I will also try to get an R2 Builder to join us once again.
Hillsides was founded in 1913, and is tucked away in a very
quiet neighborhood in South Pasadena. There is an old and historic Mission church ("Church
of the Angels") on the property. The church is viewable from the street, but the actual
orphanage ("children's group home" in modern terminology) is not.
The orphanage is 90% funded by the state of California, however, they do rely also on
donations and volunteer work for much of the services they offer, which also includes
counseling services, and one-on-one education in a school they have on the property for
grades 2 through 12. For more information about the campus, the services they offer, and
how to donate and/or volunteer, their website is [Only admins are allowed to see this link]
Please do not contact the staff at Hillsides about this event.
I'm serving as liaison for all fan groups participating, but would be happy to help arrange
anything you might need if you would like to contact the staff their about their facility.
Just like last year, they (still) have exactly 66 kids in residence there; not all of them are the
same kids as last year. - We were meant to do this!!
The kids range in ages from 8 to 18 years of age. The average age is about 12.
These kids have been in approximately five facilities prior to coming to Hillsides; they have all
really been through the system. They therefore have an understandable need to smile, and
last year they did just that! They were very happy last year, and are all excited that we are
returning.
Due to security and safety reasons, we cannot post any photos we take with kids there
on the internet. No photos of any children there can appear on the web. For a good number
of them, it's imperative that their location remain "safely anonymous." Hillsides will have their
own photographer on hand for this event. We may take our own pictures, but it is very
important that we follow this rule for the safety of the kids in residence there.
The annual STAR WARS event at Hillsides was started by me in 2011, and both the kids and
staff there have really come to look forward to it; they all really love us. It is by far my most
favorite trooping event of them all.

Re: Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
I'm hoping to get more interactivity with the clubs for the kids, including a possible "shoot-a-trooper" with the Legion, and I'll also be seeing about having the orphanage print up the Activity books in the "Apprentice Alcove" section of our website. Members attending this should probably bring a pen or a pencil, as the kids will most likely be going up to TDE members (and other costumers) asking for autographs in the special section of the Apprentice Handbook, located here:
[Only admins are allowed to see this link]
I will update the first post of this thread when the meeting is over, with the exact date and time that this event will take place.
Re: Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
The time for costumers to arrive will be at 10AM (do not arrive at the property before 9:45am); interaction with the kids will begin at approximately 11:15am.
Saber Guild will perform their lightsaber show at 11:45am, and then photo ops for kids with costumers will resume as soon as the Saber Guild show is over.
The kids will have activity sheets from our website (the "Apprentice Alcove") and other activity sheets, and they will be going around to different costumers from all the clubs attending to get autographs from costumed characters (use your TDE username). Be sure to bring a pen or pencil!
The entire troop will be over before 1pm.
I am about to send a formal email out to the other clubs; I will post the text of it here when it is completed.
Re: Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
I have created a PDF file which I will email out to the PR Officers and local leaders of the other clubs mentioned within it. Here is the simplified text of that document, which is three pages in length:
---
Hillsides orphanage troop – August 09th 2014
Where:
Hillsides
940 Avenue 64
Pasadena, Ca. 91105
campus map. We will be meeting at the the reception area (where the roundabout circle is on
the map); the area we will troop at is practically at that location, and they will have a changing area nearby for us. Males and females will have secure and separate changing areas. Since it is a Saturday, we can park anywhere on the property, as long as it is in a marked parking stall.
When:
Saturday, August 9th. Costumers are requested to show up starting from 9:45am to 10:15am. The event itself starts at 11am and will last for approximately 90 minutes to two hours.
Weapon props (such as blasters and lightsabers) are okay.
The show will start with a “Meet and Greet,” where costumers will mingle with the kids, pose for photos, and sign autographs. Saber Guild will perform their choreographed lightsaber show at approximately 1140am, and more photo taking may take place afterwards for a short while. The kids will have a number of activity sheets with them, and they'll be going around to the different costumed characters asking for character autographs. Bring a pen or pencil, if you can!
The kids will then eat lunch while we gear down; Hillsides may then treat us to lunch afterwards, as they've done for the past few years.

Things you need to know:
This trooping event is an “official” private event put on by The Dark Empire, and the following clubs are invited to join us: 501st Legion, Rebel Legion, Mandalorian Mercs, Saber Guild, and Jedi Assembly, and R2 Builders.
If you have a face character, such as Vader or Sidious, that would like to troop this event, please contact me, as there may already be face characters of that type already planning to attend. That way, I can keep record regarding specific face characters in attendance.
We will have a large need for Stormtroopers, Clone Troopers (the kids will be watching a couple of CLONE WARS episodes immediately prior to the event), Royal Guards, Mandalorians, and other “bucketed” characters, as well as Jedi, Rebel Pilots, custom Sith, etc.

The maximum occupancy of Hillsides orphanage is 66 kids, and it is always full. - We were meant to do this!!
The kids range in ages from 8 to 18 years of age. The average age is about 12.
These kids have been in approximately five facilities prior to coming to Hillsides; they have all
really been through the system. They therefore have an understandable need to smile, and

We may take our own pictures, but it is very important that we follow this rule for the safety of the kids in residence there.
Important for this year:
The kids will have a number of STAR WARS activity sheets for the first time this year, some of which involves a little interaction with members trooping this event. In addition to photo-ops, kids will be wanting autographs, and may even ask questions about STAR WARS itself. It is okay to answer their questions, if you are able to.
Hillsides is immensely appreciative to the various STAR WARS clubs that will be attending this event, and the activity sheets that the kids will have will come from the “Apprentice Alcove” section of the TDE website, as well as a special activity book that Hillsides will create for their kids specifically for this event.
The staff at Hillsides that is creating the “special activity book” would like to recognize the different clubs on it, and they are therefore requesting permission to use the various club logos on the activity book they are making for their kids. The logos will be used exclusively on materials related to this event only. I will be in contact with the leadership of each club, just to ensure that proper permission is obtained. This is a huge honor, because Hillsides itself is more than an orphanage; it offers a plethora of services in cooperation with the State of California.
The annual STAR WARS event at Hillsides was started by me in 2011, and both the kids and staff there have really come to look forward to it; they all really love us. It is by far my most favorite trooping event of them all.
See y'all there!

Re: Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
Just a heads up...
I need to know if we have any "face" characters coming. TDE doesn't have a Darth Nihilus in SoCal that I know of, so I am going to allow a Nihilus costumer in the 501st that wants to troop this.
There is also a Princess Leia from the Rebel Legion coming.
That's it for now. Post here or PM me if we have any other canon "face" characters planning to troop this.

Absolutely! Email me at [Only admins are allowed to see this link] and I'll send you a couple of PDF files you will need, one with directions and a map to the facility, the other with event info and some guidelines for the event.
I'd love to meet you in person!
Re: Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
As such, I'd really like for our members to get together (maybe with members of the other clubs, too) for a lunch / dinner that evening, although Hillsides staff usually does feed us a little.
I live in the Huntington Beach area, one mile from a Cheesecake Factory with valet parking (but of course, LOL). That, of course, is my first choice, but understandably out of the way for many people. I don't know South Pasadena all that well, though.
Does anyone have any suggestions? If not, then I'm going with Plan "A!"
Re: Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
We are expecting over 50 costumers this year from the Legions, Mercs, TDE, TJA, and also an astromech from the R2 Builders again this year. We're doing something a little different this year that we haven't done in past years, can't say what since it's a bit of a surprise - not just for the kids and staff, but for the costumers as well. This will be one orphanage visit long remembered!
Re: Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
See you Saturday!
Re: Hillsides Orphanage - Saturday August 9th, 2014
MISSION REPORT:
On Saturday, August 9th, 2014, 50+ costumers and folks from The Dark Empire, 501st Legion, Rebel Legion, Mandalorian Mercs, Saber Guild, Jedi Assembly, Rogue Rebels, and R2 Builders descended upon Hillsides orphanage in Pasadena, California, and made a house full of orphaned kids have a day filled with galactic fun. Every kid, Hillsides staff person, costumer, and wrangler received a patch commissioned especially for this year's event. Rogue Rebels (the amazing Liz and Sal Perales) gave each child a STAR WARS toy, and a member of the Mandalorian Mercs (his name escapes me, please forgive my momentary relapse of Sith-timer's) gave out a bunch of lightsaber crystals that he no doubt collected from a number of misfortunate Jedi (which is why the Sith are the Mando's best customers). 100 HNAD audio CD's were also distributed. It will be a day long remembered, for sure.
