Maple Leaf is the one of the biggest parades in SW Missouri. It is also not just a parade, this is an annual town festival that is looked forward to by many. Maple Leaf is that home town event that people who grew up in the area will come home again to attend every year. The town gets decorated. There are car shows and craft shows that take place during the week and weekend. That afternoon there is a Marching Band festival taking place. They have a variety of foods and there are a lot of grills going. It really is like a slice of the "Mom, Baseball, and Apple Pie" American legend in a lot of ways. The 501st has been making a concerted effort to raise awareness and recruiting in this area, and a big turn out at this parade is just about the perfect way to cap it off. They have never had anything like us, and this will definitely blow the minds of every kid from 8 to 80 that shows up.
The event coordinators (James Kave, Dave Smith, & Jason Bogue) are attempting to get a band that will march with us. In addition, we are trying to coordinate some activities for us to do together, and we are definitely open to suggestions. This is a "come one, come all" and it's a great chance for us to show off how supportive the Legion can be, and to get to know and have fun with some of our neighbors. I know it's a bit of a trek, but we would sincerely love to see people from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Tennessee and Arkansas to show up.
As many would need to make this an overnight, we are working on opening up homes and such so that people can have nice and cozy places to sleep. For those who collect, or have friends that collect Precious Moments figurines, Carthage is the headquarters for this. This is also a good trip for any civil war buffs to make, as they are still finding bullets and cannonballs from the battle of Carthage; and if you like old Victorian homes then this is a town you need to come see. This parade is a great opportunity to show Joplin/Carthage area what the 501st is all about, to gain support, and help recruit new members here in the southwest Missouri Region and to discover new activities that we as a Legion can help and support! Any questions please feel free to contact us by phone or you can contact James Kave or Jason Bogue on Facebook or by email atjvk1701@yahoo.com.
On behalf of Garrison 66 thank you and troop on!
